Commercial Electrician Apprenticeship Training

When you are working towards your electrician certification and are even just training to become a licensed electrician, you will need to decide what field you want to specialize in. Most electricians choose to either undertake a commercial electrician training program or an industrial electrician training program as they move forward in their careers. Commercial electrician training programs are designed to train electricians that want to work in the commercial sector and typically will work for private companies or electrical companies on various projects.

Training Programs for Commercial Electricians

Unlike general electrician programs, a commercial electrician training program focuses primarily on wiring systems and machines that are used in heavy machinery and for city projects. A commercial electrician typically has advanced skills and knowledge in their field, and is among the highest paid in the electrical trade and industry.

A commercial electrician training program typically includes courses and training in the following key areas:

  • Electrical service upgrades and repairs
  • Installation and repair of different types of electrical systems and circuits
  • Troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of different voltage systems
  • Wire, test and troubleshooting motors, generators and transformers
  • Installation and repair of fire detection systems
  • Installation and troubleshooting of I.T. computer cabling
  • Installation of audio and video wiring systems, and complete surveillance systems

A good portion of the commercial electrician training program involves the use of certain types of tools and specialty equipment. Commercial electricians are responsible for using the following types of tools to perform various tasks: PVC bender boxes; extension ladders; hydraulic and electric conduit benders; A ladders; and wire benders.

Today's commercial electricians also use software programs such as cost estimation programs and certain types of software to read and create blueprints for different jobs. Some courses in a commercial electrician training program focus on software training and can give the student valuable computer skills that can be used throughout the individual’s career.

Commercial Electrician Apprentice Programs

You will need to complete a comprehensive commercial electrician apprenticeship program when you want to get your certification in the field. Commercial electricians are considered to be tradesmen and typically work on electrical projects, systems and equipment in commercial buildings. Commercial electricians perform many of the tasks that are performed by licensed electricians, but typically take on much more complex projects. Many of the skills needed to be successful in this field are learned through a commercial electrician apprenticeship program. An apprenticeship program allows the student to work side-by-side with an experienced commercial electrician or journeyman, and work on a variety of hands-on projects and use different tools.

Examples of tasks that would be completed under a commercial electrician apprenticeship program include:

  • Basic installation and repair of motors
  • Installation and repair of generators
  • Replacing brushes and bearings of equipment
  • Constructing electrical connections or terminations
  • Installing major commercial appliances
  • Working with advanced security systems or surveillance equipment
  • Installation and repair of heaters and fire systems

During the commercial electrician apprenticeship program, the electrician serves as an assistant to the electrician that they work with and will also learn how to use different tools and materials that are used in the trade today.
